File Sharing Part II: Connecting to System 7 from Leopard
This tutorial will show you how to connect to the shared folders and disks of a computer running Mac OS 7.6 from a computer running Mac OS X Leopard. This tutorial assumes you have all the latest updates for Leopard installed, and all the latest updates for Mac OS 7.6 found in the Important Updates page installed. This tutorial also assumes you've already connected both computers to your home or office network, and have enabled TCP/IP on both. Of course, this tutorial may or may not work for different versions of the Mac OS.

Unlike Part I of the this tutorial, you'll need an additional piece of software for this to work. ShareWay IP Personal is a $39 utility that will allow you to share your files over TCP/IP from Mac OS 7. This is required in order to connect to System 7 from Mac OS X. Step One
First, enable file sharing on your System 7 computer by going to the Control Panels folder and opening Sharing Setup. Enter an owner name, password, and computer name, and click the Start button. Wait a moment while sharing starts up, and once it does, close the Sharing Setup control panel and move on to the next step.
Step Two
Next, find a volume or folder you want to share and select it in the Finder. Go the to File menu, choose Sharing... and enable "Share this item and its contents."

Below this, you will find various permission options. At the very least, you should enable See Folders, See Files, and Make Changes for the owner user. You can also set the other users any way you'd like. You can create and delete more users by going to the Users & Groups control panel. After you've configured permissions to your liking, close the Sharing... window and move on to the next step.
Step Three
Open the ShareWay IP Personal folder. Inside the ShareWay IP Personal folder you will find the ShareWay IP Personal application, as well as the ShareWay IP Personal Background launcher. Open the ShareWay IP Personal application, and click the Start button (if it isn't already enabled). Make a note of your IP address, quit the ShareWay IP application, and move on to the next step.
Step Four
Back inside the ShareWay IP Personal folder, find the ShareWay IP Personal Background launcher, select it, and make an alias by pressing Command + M, or by choosing Make Alias from the File menu.

Drag this alias into the Startup Items folder, located inside your System Folder. This will cause ShareWay IP services to start up each time you restart your computer (it will not show up as a running Application). Double click the alias to make sure it is running again (you cannot have both the ShareWay IP Personal and ShareWay IP Background services running at the same time), and move on to the next step.
Step Five
On your Leopard computer, go to the Go menu and select "Connect to Server..." In the window that appears, type in the IP address that you noted in Step Three. You can also at this time add it as a bookmark by clicking the plus button. Click Connect, and move on to the next step.
Step Six
When prompted, enter the owner name and password that you set in Step One. You an also at this time specify whether or not Leopard should remember these settings in your Keychain. Click Connect, and move on to the next step.
Congratulations! If you followed these steps exactly, you should now be able to access the contents of your System 7 computer from the Mac OS X Leopard Finder. You can drag files and folders to and from the System 7 disks just as you would any file or folder on your local computer.

To speed up the process of mounting your drive in the future, you can create an Alias to it by pressing Command + L, or choosing Make Alias from the File menu. You can also create an Automator script to automatically mount the drive without having to enter your username and password. Fancy!
